The Things We Leave Behind

Six Adventures Into Horror And The Unknown

This anthology contains six carefully crafted scenarios designed for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game. Published by Chaosium, Inc., this collection is edited by Jeff Moeller and features contributions from several talented writers, including Brian M. Sammons, Scott Dorward, Simon Brake, Oscar Rios, and Jeff Moeller himself. The artwork that accompanies the stories has been skillfully created by Davide Como, Badger McInnes, Dean Engelhardt, and Stephanie McAlea, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the book.

Drawing inspiration from various sources such as Delta Green, Fargo, Blood Simple, and True Detective, the anthology takes a serious look at the darker aspects of human nature. It explores how the horrors produced by people can often be just as terrifying as those that emerge from the Mythos. This thoughtful examination of humanity’s unsettling potential makes for gripping storytelling.

What’s in the book?

The anthology features six distinct adventures plunging into horror and the unknown, showcasing a variety of chilling narratives.

Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away Home

Written by Jeff Moeller. In this story, the investigators are faced with the urgent task of finding a missing child in a suburban neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Time is of the essence, and as they navigate the challenges of their search, tensions rise and the stakes become incredibly high.

Forget Me Not

Authored by Brian M. Sammons, begins with a mysterious accident involving a television truck in rural Michigan. The investigators regain consciousness in a ditch, struggling to piece together the events that led them there, leaving them with no memory of their situation and the dangers that might be lurking nearby.

Roots

Penned by Simon Brake, explores the investigation into a teenager who has gone missing. As the investigators dig deeper, they soon discover that some small-town communities in the Midwest prefer to keep their secrets hidden and may not welcome outsiders probing into their affairs.

Hell in Texas

Scott Dorward presents a chilling tale that starts with a tragic suicide at a Halloween haunted house operated by a church in East Texas. As the investigators become involved, they find themselves confronted with strange occurrences that threaten not only their safety but also their mental well-being.

The Night Season

Another contribution from Jeff Moeller, reveals the darker side of fandom in Anchorage, Alaska. As the story unfolds, the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur, leading to unsettling consequences for those who become too deeply enmeshed in their obsessions.

Together, these six adventures invite players and readers alike to experience the unnerving landscape of horror and the complexities of human nature, ultimately leaving a lasting impression of the things we leave behind. Dealing with unavoidable fates, abductions, murders, heresy, dark secrets, powerful forces and seriously bad choices made by the antagonists, there are no winners when fate has trapped you in a dice game for doom or destiny.

Content Warning

The Things We Leave Behind is an intriguing and thought-provoking anthology that includes a range of unsettling themes. Readers and players should be aware that this book discusses serious subjects. These themes may be disturbing and could evoke discomfort or unease.

What is Call of Cthulhu?

Call of Cthulhu is a classic tabletop role-playing game of mystery and cosmic horror where players take on the roles of ordinary people becoming investigators of the unknown to combat the terrifying forces of the Cthulhu Mythos. Set mostly in the 1920s, the game uses a dice-based Basic Roleplaying System (BRP) where players attempt to succeed at tasks by rolling under a skill percentage, and where too much exposure to the horrors of the Mythos can lead to a loss of sanity. One player acts as the “Keeper” (Game Master), guiding the story and presenting the challenges, while the other players create unique investigators from various walks of life to face these ancient, sanity-blasting entities.

This Anthology of Adventures is for 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu The Modern Era.
