Cold City Hot War Slipcase Edition

This slipcase edition features the updated second editions off the twin indie horror-espionage RPGs Cold City and Hot War.

Originally published in their first editions in 2007 and 2008, Handiwork Games is honoured and delighted to bring you new editions of both Cold City and Hot War in 2026.

These aren’t just new editions of these cult UK indie games. Designer Malcolm Craig, now a senior lecturer in history at Liverpool John Moores University, has worked with Handiwork Games as an integral part of his research work into the history of nuclear war in roleplaying games.

These new editions form part of an impact study – a look at how historical research in combination with roleplaying games can affect the understanding of history and affect the wider culture. Not only have the games been brought up to date in these new editions, but they contain additional fascinating contextual information about the history of the post-war 20th Century. This enriches the settings of both games and provides a whole new level of verisimilitude and sheer playable information. It is also be an experiment in ground-breaking presentation and the contextualisation of roleplaying games within our wider culture.

Cold City

In the divided city of post-World War II Berlin, terrors hide in the darkness.

The legacies of war, suffering, and fringe science lurk beneath the surface. Feared and desired by former allies and defeated enemies.

Those that seek out these horrors are riven by suspicion, mistrust and political ambition.

The four occupying powers of Britain, France, the USA and the USSR all have their own agendas.

As they hunt down monstrous horrors, your characters are thrust into secret worlds, pursued by betrayal, and haunted by hidden agendas.

In Cold City, characters are defined not just by who they are, but by the trust of others. You must rely on each other in order to survive, but who can you really trust?

Set in Berlin in 1950, when the Cold War has fully emerged and trust is at a premium, Cold City grapples with the legacies of twisted sciences, occult experiments, and the reality-fracturing horror of war.

Revised and reimagined from the first edition of 2006, Cold City second edition brings fresh ideas and even greater historical depth to the mechanics and presentation of this critically acclaimed RPG.

Hot War

London. Winter. 1963.

CCHW slipcase

It is a year since the Cold War went hot.

This was not just a nuclear war. Darker weapons were deployed, born of the suffering and fringe science of World War II.

Survival and re-building should be all that matter now.

But human nature and the breakdown of society mean that everyone has their own ambitions.

Into this maelstrom steps a motley band of troubleshooters tasked with the jobs too dirty or dangerous for anyone else.

They must deal with relationships, loves, hatred, and hidden agendas against the backdrop of a collapsing, ravaged, horror-strewn Britain.

Revised and reimagined from the first edition of 2008, Hot War second edition brings fresh ideas and even greater historical depth to the mechanics and presentation of this critically acclaimed RPG.
