Nakuko – A Call of Cthulhu adventure set in 1990s Japan

Nakuko opens with a family dinner in an intimate setting featuring a girl named Eiko, her parents, and two teenage friends. They are enjoying their meal in traditional Japanese fashion, sitting on bended knees around a low dinner table. The atmosphere is calm as the sound of chopsticks clinking against bowls and the aroma of food fills the air. Eiko, however, feels a sense of discomfort. Her bare legs brush against the woven Tatami mats, causing an itchiness that distracts her from the conversation. Despite the coziness, a dark cloud looms over the scene as, moments from now, Eiko’s life comes to a tragic end. She falls victim to a malevolent entity seeking revenge, bringing an abrupt and chilling end to this otherwise ordinary gathering.

In the wake of this tragedy, a group of Investigators emerges, faced with the daunting task of confronting this ominous threat. Their challenge is immense, as they grapple with the urgency of preventing further loss of life in Japan during the 1990s. A mix of tradition and modernity form the backdrop to this period, and the Investigators must navigate both as they seek answers.

Content advisory

As is often the case in life, the struggle between doom and destiny plays out dramatically. When fate puts individuals in a precarious position, it is rarely a situation where anyone truly emerges victorious. The unfolding events test the resolve, courage, and resourcefulness of the Investigators, forcing them to confront not only the external dangers that lurk in the shadows, but also the inner fears which threaten their mission. Readers should be prepared for mature themes exploring the darker aspects of human experience, making this narrative suitable for an audience of adult age and maturity.
